Paul Mills: North African Raids
Julian and I have been friends for several years, through ElCO and also the Salisbury trips. In the early years I still ran my Discovery for off roading and my LC was 'the wife's car'. Then, inevitably I got tired of fixing the Disco, and we went to play on the cruiser.
First stage was a full overhaul of axles, suspension and transmission, extra electrics, very full service, basic storage system, and fitting bumper etc. Throughout this time I was very impressed with Julian's creativity, focus of thought and, like me, On the fundamentals of vehicle prep. I also liked that he wasn't trying to 'sell' me lots of expensive gizmo's and bling - it's all too easy to focus on posing and ignore the basics. This initial work was during the early stages, so I was also impressed with his willingness to work outside in the cold….. something that, being an ex land rover owner, I was used to….. .
There was then a 2 year gap, and 3 significant trips, during which the cruiser did me proud. Three days ago it came back from stage two , having merely been serviced over the intervening 25,000 miles. Using Julian's vast knowledge of cruisers worldwide, and the fact that mine was fast approaching 170,000 miles we did some preventative work, overhauling the fuel system, new big ends, refurb of starter and alternator etc. In all 3 days work, and some bits - less than 10p per mile maintenance costs - heaven. Wish fuel was equally cheap….
I am happy to say that I would thoroughly recommend Julian and his work to anyone, and would be happy to be contacted to verify this. An added bonus is that our families have also become firm friends, so, on the odd occasion that I need his expertise the wife and kids are happy too :-).
